The planet we live in is called the earth. This planet is one of its kind because it supports life and has life-supporting elements such as oxygen and water. The ozone layer acts as a protective shield. Earth among the other planets in our solar system is the largest rocking planet that is orbiting around the earth.

Going further in this article, we will learn about interesting facts that are related to the earth.

  • The earth is the only planet in our solar system that supports life. This is because of the abundance of oxygen and water. Also, the distance between the sun and the earth is such that the weather on the earth is neither too hot nor too cold making it suitable for life.
  • The second most important factor that acts as life support on the earth is the atmosphere. There are five layers of atmosphere and these layers play different roles in supporting life. Such as the presence of ozone in the atmosphere protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.
  • Our home planet, the earth gets its name from the old English and Germanic words which means the ground. Also, it is the third planet from the sun.
  • It would be fascinating to know that our planet is 4.5 billion years old. This number was obtained by studying the rocks that are present on the earth.
  • The speed at which the earth orbits the sun is 30 kilometres per second. To complete one full orbit around the sun, the earth takes 365 days. This is one year for us.
  • The reason why we experience different seasons throughout the year is that the earth is titled 23.4 degrees on its axis. This axis is an imaginary line that is passing through the North pole and the South pole.
  • The days and nights are the results of the spinning of the earth on its axis. When the earth rotates the side facing the sun receives the daylight while the other half of the earth is in the darkness.
  • Another interesting fact about the earth is that it is not spherical in shape. In fact, it has the shape of the squished ball such that it bulges at the equator. This shape is attained due to the presence of gravity.
  • Gravity can be defined as the invisible force which attracts all the objects towards each other. This invisible force is responsible for stopping us from floating into space. Gravity makes our life simpler on the surface of the earth.
  • The earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system as it has a diameter of 12,800 kilometres. It wouldn’t be surprising to know that the other planets such as Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune are even bigger than the earth.
  • Lastly, don’t be surprised to know that the earth has its own magnetic field. The earth’s magnetic field is generated by the currents that are flowing in the earth’s outer core. The cause of the vibrant phenomenon known as aurorae is due to the magnetic field of the earth. When the charged particles from the sun get trapped in the magnetic field of the earth, they get smashed into the air molecules above the magnetic poles and this makes them glow.

Stay tuned to learn more about the earth’s gravitational field and similar concepts.
